A live musical and spoken word event

Poetry, which taps into universal rhythm and rhyme, plays a role in healing by expressing devotional feelings that linear prose can only hint at. Mary Baker Eddy was an accomplished poet, and hymns based on her poems are often part of our church services.

We invite you to join us in the Reading Room to read (and sing!) Mrs. Eddy’s poetry, plus work by contemporary poets who inspired her, such as Longfellow and Whittier. We will discuss how the recitation of verse was universally taught and practiced as an important social skill of that time, and how close reading of poetry can deepen our own spiritual practice.
